From The Wet Plates, Tintypes and Daguerreotypes Department
Most of my street shooting in 2017 has been in the Central Business District [CBD] of Melbourne. This is essentially the grid of 32 city blocks designed by Robert Hoddle in 1837. Other close by shooting locations, include the adjoining Yarra riverbank, recently reclaimed Docklands and the Victoria Market.

My fave top three street photographers are, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier and André Kertész. This is mainly because of their peerless composition. No surprises there!
However, I’m not picking from these three as my street photographer influence for two reasons.
Firstly, as photographers shooting essentially in Europe and America, they shot in very different light. Australian light has different qualities to particularly, European light. [Note the light in the shots by Trent Parke of Sydney in the Street Photography Hub presentations]. Colonial European painters often had issues with the Australian light [and the very different landscape], with many early works looking un-Australian.
Secondly, I wanted to choose a photographer who shot in the same places that I am shooting in.
So, my personal street photographer influence, is Mark Strizic. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Strizic.
Strizic shot in Melbourne for over 50 years, including some iconic shots of the Melbourne CBD.
See examples https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/artist/2019/. As is work is still copyright so I can only post links. His studio for many years in Collins Street, Melbourne. Many of his great shots were in that street.
See some of his shots in Collins Street here.
For more on see the book Mark Strizic: Melbourne: Marvellous to Modern [by Emma Matthews, 2008]
While Collins Street has changed somewhat since Strizic’s time, here are four of my Collins Street shots below, with reference to his specific images below each. I think many of Strizic’s shots where mainly taken in Autumn or Spring, so as it is the middle of winter here the light maybe much flatter.
